Rasikh: Rootedness, Memory, and Faith at America’s Crossroads

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, questions of history, belonging, faith, and national identity carry renewed urgency. In Rasikh: Rootedness, Memory, and Faith at America’s Crossroads, Dr. Kameelah Mu’Min Oseguera draws upon the SelebeYoon paradigm and the Black Muslim tradition to explore what it means to remain spiritually, ethically, and historically grounded during periods of profound rupture and uncertainty.
Centering Rasikh—an Arabic word meaning deeply rooted, firmly grounded, steadfast in knowledge and faithrootedness—Dr. Oseguera considers memory not simply as recollection, but as a source of orientation, healing, responsibility, and moral clarity. Through the life and writings of enslaved West African Muslim scholar Omar ibn Said, alongside the wisdom of Black Muslim thinkers, communities, and traditions, the address asks what histories must be acknowledged, what truths we must confront, and what spiritual resources we will need to move forward with purpose. This reflection invites us to consider how deeply rooted traditions can help us meet this national and theological crossroads with honesty, courage, discernment, and hope.
